The last thing any of us want is to be left out in the cold this winter with car troubles. From frozen locks, cold starts, and roadside strandings, winter can pose a number of difficulties for us motorists. Here’s a run-down of some key checkpoints to keep you motoring safely this chilly season.

Tyres
Firstly we’d always advise you check tyres, from simply making sure they’re inflated to the correct pressure and checking the tread isn’t worn – these aren’t just safety issues, under-inflated or over-worn tyres will also land you in trouble with the law too, with hefty fines and points on your license. For total peace of mind stop by and ask us to take a look, or pop into your nearest tyre centre who we’re sure will be only too happy give them a once-over. You could also consider swapping your tyres for winter tyres – common practice on the Continent; these give extra grip and control when temperatures drop below 7°C.

Battery
If your car’s less than eager to start up in the mornings, it could be time to change the battery. This is the most common cause of breakdowns, but very easily rectified. If you don’t already have breakdown cover, it may be worth considering joining either the AA or the RAC for example, as they now usually carry new batteries with them and can replace yours at the roadside. If in doubt we’re more than happy to check out your battery’s performance for you.

Windscreen
Check your windscreen for chips or cracks and get them attended to – sooner rather than later! With extreme temperatures outside, and the heater on full tilt inside the car, the likelihood is that before too long they will cause a problem if left unattended. In most cases it’s as simple as checking with your insurance company: most offer windscreen repairs or replacement either for free or a small payment. If your wiper blades are over year old, they may need replacing too… and always check you’ve plenty of good quality screen wash in your bottle – don’t substitute it with washing up liquid!

Oil & Radiator
Be sure to check your oil level, and if it’s been a while since your last service it’s also a good idea to check the strength of your anti-freeze and whether your radiator has any visible leaks or cracks. This is best done by a garage, and again, we’re more than happy to take a look under the hood for you.

Servicing
Less obvious, but just as likely to cause you car problems are exhausts, shock absorbers, and cam belts. Did you know that the RAC alone attend to 36,000 breakdowns each year caused by broken timing belts? If you’re in any doubt, check your service schedule and consult your garage for their advice.

Survival Kit
Lastly as a basic precaution, be sure to pop a few additional items into your car if the weather turns, or you’re planning a long trip. Here’s a simple check list:

• Clothing – cold weather gear including coats, blankets & gloves
• Food – emergency rations such as crackers, granola bars, chocolate
• Light – a torch (plus extra batteries)
• Tools – jump leads, shovel, warning triangle.
• Fuel – always allow ample fuel (and time, too) for your journey.

A well-maintained car should keep you motoring over the cold season to come. Pop in and see us, or call for more information about a quick winter check-up, we’d be delighted to help.

Safe driving!
